Tulcea, December 12, 2012 – Alum Tulcea (BVB: BBGA) (“Alum,” “the Company”), the only producer of alumina in Romania, has invested 10 million dollars in the modernization and re-technologization of the red mud dump since 2009, following the resumption of operations. As a result of this complex modernization program, the Ministry of Environment and Forests renewed the Operating License for the Safe Operation of the Red Mud Dump until 2016, following recommendations from the Central Commission for the Approval of Safety Evaluation Documentation for Dam Operations.
“We implemented a complex modernization program with significant impacts on environmental protection and will continue to take responsible measures to ensure compliance with all regulations in the field,” said Gheorghe Dobra, CEO of Vimetco and General Manager of Alum. “Despite challenging market conditions, we are determined to continue our long-term development plans in Tulcea as part of an international group.”
The modernization program included the partial closure of the red mud dump over an area of 4.8 hectares and the construction of a system for the deposition of dense-phase sludge. Key works involved transitioning to dense-phase sludge deposition technology with a minimum solid content of 52%.
Alum constructed a new transport and storage system for dense-phase sludge deposition, modernized the wetting system of the dump, reinforced the dikes, and completed the drainage system for the dump in the event of heavy rainfall.
By the end of the year, the Company will complete all construction works for capturing rainwater upstream of the red mud dump and diverting it through a system of hydraulic arrangements, in accordance with the plan approved by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Central Commission for the Approval of Safety Evaluation Documentation for Dam Operations.
Between 2007 and 2009, the alumina refinery carried out a complex modernization and re-technologization program. The resumption of Alum in 2009 involved hiring 470 people, and the company currently employs 600 people. The Company replaced some of the existing equipment to achieve a more efficient production process and comply with European environmental protection standards. After implementing the modernization program, the technological flow was optimized, resulting in competitive production costs.
