Alro Slatina awarded for its energy efficiency program

  • During “The Diplomat Bucharest Romanian Energy Awards 2014”, the jury decided to honor the Company’s performances regarding the reduction of the energy consumption

Slatina, 9 May 2014 – Alro SA (BSE: ALR, “The Company” or “Alro”), one of the largest aluminium producers in Central and Eastern Europe, received the award for the “Energy efficiency program of the year”, offered by the business publication The Diplomat – Bucharest, under the high patronage of the Romanian Ministry of Economy – Department of Energy.

The jury was formed by Elena Popescu, General Director Energy and Environment Direction at the Ministry of Energy, Bogdan Chiritoiu, the President of the Romanian Competition Council, Zoltan Nagy-Bege, member of the Board of the Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority, Silvia Vlasceanu, Parliamentary adviser in the Industry and Services Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and General Director of the Association of Energy Utilities, Ciprian Diaconu, member of the Supervisory Board at Transelectrica and Valeriu Binig, Director Financial Advisory Services / Energy & Resources / Corporate Finance, Deloitte.

“Over the past 10 years we focused on increasing the efficiency of our operations and on investing in state of the art technology that allows us to reduce consumption at lowest levels possible in this industry”, said Marian Nastase, President of the Board of Alro. “The investment programme, coupled with a very well trained team in our Research and Development sector led us to achieve best results in the industry related to the reduction of energy consumption. Alro is, now, at the highest level of energy efficiency obtainable in the aluminium industry.”

Through the energy efficiency program, Alro reported a reduced consumption of electricity per tonne of aluminium by over 75%, for flat rolled products, in the past 10 years, while the natural gas consumption decreased by more than 90%, during this period. The direct electricity consumption for the entire production process of the smelter was 10% lower in 2012, compared to 2003, while the total natural gas consumption was 30% lower.
